The first leg of our trip along The Ring of Kerry featured a quick departure off the trail at Cahersiveen for Castles and Ring Fortresses and at Portmagee or lunch in a traditional pub and across a bridge to Valentia Island, where the first transatlantic cables were set.
Ballycarbery Castle - original building in the 14th century with this structure built in the 16th. It is in ruin and sits casually in the backyard of some local houses. Sheep graze right alongside (we saw their 'evidence' but not them) and there is no one of authority, setting the stage for some mild climbing adventure (us) and some more risky scaling of the walls (a young German couple).
A walk along the path to the Fogher Cliffs. An impressive site on Valentia Island with (FINALLY!) some sensible railings to put Daddy at ease.
